Premarket: Risk-Off Mood Returns, S&P 500 Futures Slump

S&P 500 futures point to a weak opening as the recovery in stocks stop for a breath. Risk-off sentiment returned amid worries that the impact from the coronavirus outbreak will be extended till the end of the first half of the year. The U.S. Retail Sales came in at -8.7%, below the expectations of -8% in March. A positive figure came from the Retail Sales Control Group which came in at 1.7%, topping the expectations of -2%. The NY Empire State Manufacturing Index slumped to -78.2 below the forecasts of -35 in April. 

On the earnings front, Citigroup first-quarter EPS came in at $1.05 well below the previous year of $1.87; the consensus was for $1.07. 

Nasdaq 100 futures are 1.41% lower at 8569, the Dow Jones futures are 1.86% lower at 23432, while the S&P 500 futures are 2.13% lower at 2782. 

European Stocks Lower

European markets are trading lower by midday; the DAX Index is 2.44% lower at 10,432. The CAC 40 is 2.29% lower at 4,418. FTSE 100 is 2.43% lower at 5,650, while the FTSE Mib index is 2.77% lower at 17,071.

Cryptocurrencies Retreat Before Wall Street Opening

Cryptocurrencies are trading lower by midday; Bitcoin price volatility drops as traders looking for direction, as of writing is 2.36% lower at 6719. Ripple price is 1.69 lower at 0.1830. Ethereum is 1.49% lower at 156.24, while Litecoin is 1.99% lower at 40.40. 

Crude Oil Price Slumps to 2002 Lows

 WTI crude oil price is 2.09% lower at $19.68 while the Brent crude oil is 5.17% lower at $28.49 per barrel. Gold price is 0.78% lower at 1715. Silver price is 2.10% lower at $15.40.  

In the forex markets, GBPUSD tests 1.25 mark on USD strength. The USDJPY is 0.33% lower at 107.56. Rand drops like a rock after government ends airline support. AUDUSD is 2.39% lower at 0.6288. NZDUSD is 2.36% lower at 0.5961. USDCAD is 1.60% higher at 1.4104.
